This advanced NL Hold'em study path is for serious players who already know the basics and want a sharper order of operations: build ranges, apply pressure, size around stack depth, plan SPR, shape pot-limit geometry, and choose the exploit that best punishes the pool.

Curriculum spine

Decision density sets the order. Start with range shape, then add pressure, depth, and leverage.

The spine below is the shortest route through the site for serious NL and PL work. Each card points to the lesson or tool that should come next.

1. Range construction

Build open, call, and fold ranges before any pressure or sizing work.

2. 3-bet and 4-bet pressure

Target capped continue ranges and learn which blockers justify aggression.

Shift range shape as the hand moves from shallow pressure to deep realization.

4. SPR planning

Step 1

Pre-flop range architecture

Prereq

Know the default open and defend shells for your main game and stack band.

Goal

Build open, call, and fold ranges around position, rake, and stack depth.

Label 25 hands by action and explain why each hand keeps or loses range value.

Can you justify 8 of 10 actions without looking at notes?

Step 2

3-bet and 4-bet pressure

Prereq

Have your base opening ranges and continue bands mapped by position.

Goal

Choose the value and bluff bands that force the opener into low-equity continue ranges.

Drill

Run 12 opener profiles and sort the hands into value, pressure, or fold.

Pass gate

Can you name the blocker or range reason behind every bluff 3-bet?

Step 3

Stack-depth bands

Prereq

Know which pre-flop hands still realize value when the stack gets shorter or deeper.

Goal

Shift your range and sizing decisions as stacks move from shallow to deep.

Drill

Rebuild one spot at 40bb, 75bb, 100bb, and 150bb.

Pass gate

Can you name the first street where the hand can no longer retreat?

Step 4

SPR planning

Prereq

Have a target river stack in mind before you size the flop.

Goal

Map flop and turn sizing to the stack-to-pot ratio you want on the river.

Drill

Work five flops and compute the river stack if you take your preferred line.

Pass gate

Can you state your target SPR before you size the flop?

  • Can you name the river stack you are creating before the flop bet goes in?
  • Can you tell when the next street should become a value street instead of a probe?

Pass: the flop size creates the river stack you wanted.

Fail: you are sizing by feel instead of pot path.

Step 5

Pot-limit geometry

Prereq

Understand the stack target and SPR you want if the hand continues.

Goal

Plan raise sizes inside the pot-limit cap while preserving future street leverage.

Drill

Trace the pot after each action for three PL lines and compare your end states.

Pass gate

Can you predict whether the turn pot should stay capped or accelerate?

Pass: pot-limit lines keep future leverage intact.

Step 6

Turn leverage

Prereq

Have the flop plan and pot geometry defined before the turn card appears.

Goal

Pick barrel cards that improve your range advantage or deny the right continues.

Drill

Mark the turn cards that create leverage on four common board textures.

Pass gate

Can you explain why the turn changes fold equity before the river card arrives?

  • Can you name the turns that strengthen your range and the turns that strengthen villain?
  • Can you decide whether to keep barreling or lock in showdown value?

Pass: you know which turns create the next barrel.

Fail: every turn is treated as a generic barrel card.

Step 7

River leverage and blockers

Prereq

Know which turns still allow the range to keep pressure on the river.

Goal

Use blockers, range caps, and missed draws to choose value bets and bluffs.

Drill

Sort 20 river spots into value, bluff, or bluff-catch using blocker logic only.

Pass gate

Can you name the card that should be overbet and why it works?

Checkpoint before you advance
  • Can you identify which blocker removes the best continue and which one does not matter?
  • Can you distinguish a river bluff from a bluff-catch decision that should simply fold?

Pass: blockers change your river decision tree.

Fail: blockers are only being used as a label.

Step 8

Exploit selection and review

Prereq

Know the population leak you are actually seeing in the pool or lineup.

Goal

Choose the exploit that fits the population leak instead of forcing a balanced default.

Drill

Write one exploit rule for each opponent profile you see most often.

Pass gate

Can you tie each adjustment to a visible population tendency?

  • Can you state the exploit, the target, and the stopping rule?
  • Can you tell whether the adjustment still works after the pool adapts?

Pass: the exploit is specific and reversible.

Fail: you are changing ranges without a stopping rule.
