Blocker-driven range splits in pressure pots.

This guide turns blocker logic into a practical split framework for 3-bet and 4-bet pots. The goal is not to “have blockers” in the abstract. The goal is to route a hand into the correct branch: value, bluff, merge, or bluff-catch, then size the line so the branch still makes sense on later streets.

Framework

Split the range by what the blocker actually changes.

The split is simple once the pressure point is clear. Value wants calls from worse. Bluffs want the best folds to remain available. Merges live in the middle with enough equity or playability to continue. Bluff-catch hands keep the opponent's bluff region intact and are usually the hands people mislabel as “blocker-sensitive.”

Value

Keep the top of range intact

Value hands do not need heroic blocker logic. They need enough density to extract from the calling region without letting the range look too thin. In 4-bet pots this usually means the made hands that stay ahead of the continue band even when blockers are ignored.

  • Rule: do not downgrade value just because the hand blocks a raise.
  • Goal: keep worse overpairs, top pair, and dominated broadways in.
Bluff

Remove the call region, not the fold region

Pure bluffs need to block strong continues and avoid blocking the hands you want gone. Ace blockers are common because they reduce AA and AK density. King blockers can matter when the continue range is heavy in KQ, KK, and Kx top-pair holdings.

  • Rule: prefer blockers that remove real continues, not decorative blockers.
  • Goal: preserve the folds and keep a future street story alive.
Merge

Use middling strength when the pool overfolds

Merge hands are the most context-sensitive branch. They combine showdown value, backdoor equity, and removal. In practice they are strongest when your size can force folds from the middle of villain's range while still getting called by worse.

  • Rule: do not merge into a range that lacks a clear river plan.
  • Goal: capture fold equity without turning a hand into a bad bluff.
Bluff-catch

Keep the opponent's misses alive

Bluff-catch hands care less about removal and more about whether the villain can still arrive with enough air. If your exact cards block too many missed draws, the hand often stops being a real bluff-catcher and turns into a thin value or fold decision.

  • Rule: do not overvalue blockers that delete the bluffs you want to call.
  • Goal: choose the branch that keeps the widest bluff pool open.

Split logic

Three questions decide the branch in 3-bet and 4-bet pots.

First, ask which value hands are removed from villain's range by your exact combo. Second, ask whether the hand blocks the folds or the calls. Third, ask if the board and stack depth still support a line on turn and river. If the answer to any one of those is “no,” downgrade the branch immediately.

Worked examples

Three case studies that show how the branch changes.

Ace blocker

A5s in a 4-bet pot

Cutoff opens, button 3-bets, cutoff 4-bets, and button arrives with A5s. The ace blocker removes AA and AK density, which makes the hand a cleaner 5-bet bluff candidate than a hand without ace removal. The branch is not value, and it is not bluff-catch. It is a polar bluff if the stack depth and pool fold threshold support it.

Branch note: promote the hand only if the 4-bet range still contains enough medium-strength folds and your sizing can force them off.
King blocker

KQs in a 3-bet pot

The opener calls a 3-bet, the flop is Q-8-4 with two suits, and KQs retains top-pair value plus a strong king blocker against some continue lines. Here the blocker is not a pure bluff tool. It can split into a merge when the size targets worse queens, pocket pairs, and draws, or into bluff-catch if the pool continues too wide.

Branch note: use the king blocker to protect a merge, not to turn a showdown hand into a thin bluff without follow-through.
Suit blocker

A♠Q♦ on a spade-heavy runout

In a 3-bet pot, a spade-heavy board gives A♠Q♦ direct suit removal against the nut-flush region, but only if the rest of the line still represents value. The suit blocker can move a hand from bluff-catch into bluff on the river, yet it can also remain a bluff-catch if the opponent still has too many made hands.

Branch note: a suit blocker matters most when the river card leaves villain capped and the line can credibly contain stronger flushes.

Drills

Work the branch by asking one concrete question per spot.

The point of the drill is not to memorize a “best hand.” The point is to label the branch and prove that the blocker actually improves that branch under pressure.

Drill 1

Ace blocker test

You hold A5s facing a 4-bet after opening and 3-betting. Does the ace blocker create enough fold equity to keep the hand in the bluff branch?

Answer framework: yes only when the 4-bet range still includes enough folds and your size can threaten the portion of the range you block least.
Drill 2

King blocker test

You hold KQs in a 3-bet pot on Q-8-4. Is the correct split value, merge, or bluff-catch once the turn card changes little?

Answer framework: usually merge first, then downgrade to bluff-catch if the turn removes fold equity or the population continues too wide.
Drill 3

Suit blocker test

You hold A♠Q♦ on a spade-heavy runout in a 3-bet pot. Do you have a real river bluff or just a hand that blocks one part of villain's value region?

Answer framework: only bluff if the earlier streets already build a credible value story and the runout caps the opponent hard enough to force folds.
