Pot limit / turn and river planning
In pot-limit raise geometry strategy, the legal ceiling is not the strategic answer. The good size is the one that creates the exact turn SPR you want, forces the right river branch, and keeps your value hands and blocker bluffs in the same geometry story instead of handing the hand back to the opponent.
Geometry rules
The raise cap is mechanical, but the strategic meaning comes from the stack left behind. A pot-limit raise that creates a low river SPR usually wants a polarized value-and-bluff branch. A smaller raise may keep medium-strength holdings and blockers alive for one more street.

A raise is only good if the remaining stack matches your street plan. If you arrive at the river with an awkward SPR, you have already made the pot-limit size too large or too small.
Some turns are meant to lock in a river shove or blocker bluff. Others are meant to preserve a check branch, a thin value branch, or a bluff-catch branch. The raise size should make that choice obvious.
Turn setup
Pot-limit turn play is usually about pre-loading the river. If the raise creates a pot that is too small, your value range loses pressure. If it creates a pot that is too large, you may remove the flexibility you needed for blocker-based branches or medium-strength value.
When your value range dominates and your bluffs have strong blockers, the pot-limit cap can be correct because it pushes the river SPR low enough that the final street becomes value-heavy and polar.
If your hand wants a river check, a blocker bluff, or a thin-value decision, a smaller turn raise can preserve the line that a max raise would destroy.
Worked examples
The examples below use a turn pot before action and a single villain bet. The point is not the exact board texture. The point is how the legal cap changes the remaining stack and the river branch.
The maximum total bet is 24bb. If you raise to the cap and get called, the pot becomes 40bb and only 16bb remain behind. That is a river SPR of 0.40, which is basically a forced polarized finish.
If instead you raise smaller to 16bb total, the called pot is 32bb and you still have 24bb behind. The river SPR rises to 0.75, which keeps some checking and blocker handling in range.
The cap is 36bb total. If called, the pot becomes 60bb and 44bb remain. The river SPR is 0.73, which is low enough to pressure capped continues but still leaves room for a non-all-in river decision.
A smaller raise to 24bb total creates a 48bb pot and leaves 56bb behind. That SPR of 1.17 is often better when you want medium-value hands, blockers, and some bluff-catchers to survive to the river.
The legal ceiling is 48bb total. If called, the pot becomes 80bb and 102bb remain, so the river SPR is still 1.28. The cap does not commit the hand by itself, so the size has to be chosen for range shape.
In deep spots, a pot raise is only worth it when it improves value density or blocker leverage enough to justify the inflated river pot. Otherwise, a smaller raise often preserves the street structure better.
River sequencing
If the turn sizing was right, the river should fall into one of three branches: forced polar pressure, medium-SPR thin value, or a preserved control line. If the river feels improvised, the turn size probably missed the mark.
When the river SPR is below about 0.5, value hands should bet with high confidence and bluffs need a blocker story. This is the branch that uses the pot-limit raise to compress the rest of the hand.
When the river SPR sits near 0.7 to 1.2, the decision is often about blocker selection and value density, not raw aggression. The size you picked on the turn should keep that choice manageable.
