NL foundations to NL Hold'em
Learn the game before you chase the big bluff.
No Limit Hold'em is simple to start and deep enough to study for years. This guide gives new players the table layout, hand flow, betting rules, position basics, and first strategy habits needed to play a real session with confidence.
Blinds start the pot
The two players left of the dealer button post the small blind and big blind. Those forced bets create action before anyone sees a flop.
Two private, five shared
Each player gets two hole cards. The board can run flop, turn, and river, giving everyone five community cards to combine with their own.
Showdown or folds
You win when every opponent folds, or when your best five-card hand beats the remaining players at showdown.
Hand flow
The four betting rounds
- Preflop: act after receiving two hole cards. Call, raise, or fold based on hand strength and position.
- Flop: three community cards appear. Re-check whether the board helps your range or your opponent's range.
- Turn: the fourth board card changes draws, made hands, and bet sizing pressure.
- River: the final card arrives. Bets now represent value, bluffs, or a reason to get to showdown.
Acting later is a real advantage
The dealer button acts last after the flop, which means that player sees more information before deciding. Beginners should play tighter from early seats, open more hands near the button, and avoid calling too many weak hands from the blinds.
Start tight
Enter fewer pots with better hands. Premium pairs, strong broadways, and suited connected hands are easier to navigate.
Raise with purpose
A raise should build value, isolate weaker ranges, or apply pressure. Avoid clicking buttons just to see what happens.
